Just Remember "SS & RR" — The Golden Rule of Pickleball Positioning

Ever feel like you're getting pushed around early in a game even though you haven't been playing that long? Your opponent always seems to have the upper hand, and you feel stuck on defense the whole time? If that sounds familiar, this post is for you. Today I'm breaking down the two most common positioning mistakes beginners make — and how to fix them.

Mistake 1 — Rushing forward after serving, straight into the "Death Zone"

What's the problem?

A lot of beginners naturally step into the court after serving, just following their body's momentum. Since the force and motion of your serve naturally carry you forward, you end up unconsciously drifting into the court. And this is exactly where the most dangerous spot on the court is — the "Death Zone."

It's the area roughly 5 feet (1.5m) in front of the baseline, often called "No Man's Land." It's the single most dangerous position in pickleball.

If you're standing inside the court after serving, you'll automatically end up in a defensive posture when handling your opponent's return. Even worse, your weight shifts back onto your heels, which unintentionally causes your next shot (the third shot — a drop or drive) to pop up higher than intended. A high ball is basically handing your opponent a golden attacking opportunity.

So what should you do instead?

After serving, you need to stay put behind the baseline. The key is overcoming the forward momentum from your serve and holding your ground. Behind the baseline is one of the safest defensive positions in pickleball.

Benefits of staying behind the baseline:

  • Gives you enough time and space to handle your opponent's return
  • Lets you execute an accurate third shot from a balanced stance
  • Avoids the danger of No Man's Land while you wait for your next opportunity
  • Gives you flexibility to move forward or retry, depending on how your third shot goes

Mistake 2 — Camping on the baseline after returning, leaving your partner isolated

What's the problem?

The second common mistake is staying put on the baseline even after hitting your return shot. Your partner is already waiting behind the kitchen line (the Non-Volley Zone line), but you — the one who just returned — are left alone at the back.

What happens then? Your opponents take advantage of the gap while you're stuck at the back, rushing forward to claim the kitchen line first and grabbing the advantageous position. You end up playing the rest of the point at a 2-on-1 disadvantage.

So what should you do instead?

After returning, you need to sprint straight to the kitchen line. The key is standing side-by-side with your partner right behind the kitchen line, holding an aggressive team position together. This is how you claim the advantageous position before your opponents do.

That said, while moving to the kitchen line, you still need to clear No Man's Land as quickly as possible. If you stop or hesitate along the way, you'll end up standing in the most dangerous spot on the court.

The golden rule — "SS & RR"

There's a simple formula to remember these two positioning rules:

  • SS (Serve and Stay): Serve, then stay (behind the baseline)
  • RR (Return and Run): Return, then run (to the kitchen line)

Just remembering this simple formula will dramatically improve your positioning.

Tips for putting it into practice

When practicing your serve: Try intentionally taking a step backward after your serving motion. Consciously hold the baseline so you don't drift into the Death Zone.

When practicing your return: Position yourself about 2m behind the baseline for your return. As you move forward, practice taking your first step toward the kitchen line at the same moment you hit your return. Just clear the Death Zone quickly — don't linger there.

Communicate with your partner: Share this principle with your partner before a match, and check each other's positioning throughout.

Recognize the Death Zone: Clearly identify where the transition zone is on the court, and make sure you never stop moving while you're in it.

Bottom line

Positioning matters just as much as technique in pickleball. Understanding and avoiding the danger of the Death Zone in particular is a key turning point in going from beginner to intermediate. No matter how good your shot is, its effectiveness is cut in half if you're standing in the wrong spot.

Practice these two principles consistently, and you'll notice your game becoming noticeably more relaxed and aggressive. Next time you're on the court, try calling out "SS & RR" and surprise your opponents with proper positioning!
